In my opinion, the biggest thing you need to be considering is long-term logistics and sustainability. Your command post may be a perfect location and design when just starting out the search, but what if the search lasts multiple days and/or expands to involve hundreds of searchers? Do you have enough space to be staging responders nearby, but out of the way of base? Do you have facilities available for base staff who may spend several days serving with operations and planning? What about ways to physically separate the folks planning from the communications from the folks briefing field teams so they don't get distracted by one another. The first night of a search, our logistics chief is often working through the night to prep base for the inflow of searchers/bystanders in the morning, changing layouts, posting signs and taping off areas as command staff only or field team leaders only.

What are the key issues that need to be considered when setting up a base of operations?
